Welcome to this blog

This is the CI3510 COMPUTER GRAPHICS blog.

I am going to be using this blog as a repository for notes, various links and also as a moderated-discussions mechanism.

I encourage you all to comment on my posts. If you do so regularly and beneficially, you will be awarded extra marks to contribute towards your coursework component.

I am going to start off by recapping the various things I discussed today.

  1. 50-50 exam-coursework breakdown
  2. Coursework consists of Maya project
  3. Final exam will be open book
  4. The purpose of the lectures is to act as a guide to the various complicated, dense textbooks on Computer Graphics.
  5. I am happy for students to interrupt me during my teaching, to ask questions.
  6. I often ask questions and want to have interaction with as many students as I can.
  7. I do not like the same students answering all the questions; so try only a couple of times.
  8. I like to give a ten-minute break in the middle of the lecture, to allow you to walk around, get a tea, and refresh.
  9. If I get busy fixing some files, or planning an activity, feel free to talk and go to the loo if you like - again to refresh.
  10. I do not like people to come in later than 2.15pm
  11. During class, I might set an activity. This will be flagged, and I will explain the purpose of the activity. If I don't, remind me.
  12. Computer Graphics is a field that more or less started in the early 1970s. It has been undergoing tremendous advances in the last decade or two - WHY?
  13. This module uses the industry-standard software Maya. But, like driving a car, using Maya does not mean you know how it works. This module attempts to go "under the bonnet" and look into how Maya (or other software) do the things that they do.
  14. Computer Graphics is the use of maths and physics to enable us to simulate reality in images and animations.
  15. The colour depth of a screen is the number of bits used to represent colour information per pixel.
  16. The size of the framebuffer is its width*height*colourdepth
  17. The graphics pipeline is a series or chain of steps we use to create an image.
  18. The pipeline can roughly be summarised as modelling, projection, and rendering.

My questions for you:

  1. What are you getting out of this module, what are your expectations?
  2. Do you know what vectors are?
  3. Do you like trigonometry?
